A language breakthrough!
More speaking confidence
Read the following from one of my French language coaching students:
I had kind of a breakthrough yesterday during a conversation club meetup. For the first time, I really felt like I was just having a conversation with someone. I wasn't trying to think of my answers. I was really listening intently to my conversation partner and responding to the conversation.
Let’s take a look at how she did it.
About the student
She has an intermediate level and has been studying French diligently for a number of years. What she struggled with the most was conversation, both in terms of finding the right words to say and understanding people’s replies.
What led to the breakthrough
Here’s what she had to say:
I’m not really sure. It might be that I have more confidence in my comprehension and speaking skills. Not that they’re perfect, but I feel more comfortable and not afraid to make mistakes or ask for clarification. I think maybe, a great part of it is that I’m (in your words) living the language because every day I’m exposing myself to French.
Let’s take a look at how she has spent her study time (81.25 hours thus far since November of 2025, equating to about 30 to 45 minutes a day).
Notice how much time she spends listening and speaking. In fact, as I look at this chart it makes me want to add a bit more speaking into my own Ukrainian study routine. I think it would help. I’m in a little bit of a rut at the moment.
