Creating the BEST personalized plan to reach fluency in a foreign language
Welcome to the next instalment of Guiding You to Fluency.
In my previous blog post, I told you how to set a language learning goal. Today we’ll learn about how to create a plan that will actually work to go reach it. How exciting!
If you have a track record
If you have ever successfully learned a language before, it is worth considering using the same approach again. For example, I had a consultation with a student today who reached an advanced level in 2 languages and an intermediate level in a 3rd language. She used the same method for each language. For someone with such a track record, I would recommend they keep doing what worked before.
For newbies
If someone doesn’t have a track record, I tend to walk them through some broad pathways to their goal. There are many that I may bring up (it depends on a student’s goals), but I would say the most common approach ends up being some form of mixture between lessons and self-study. Some people take lots of lessons with minimal self-study, others do the opposite. Some do an even blend. It just depends.
The problem
Here’s the thing: in most cases people don’t know what kind of approach will be best for them. This is especially the case for newbies. In the next Guiding You to Fluency post, I will share what I do to make sure students begin to get a better idea of how they learn best and to really give them the best chance of reaching their goals, whatever they may be.
Stay tuned! 😉
