In my experience, a significant percentage of language learners only want to become conversational in another language. While it is not easy to accomplish this, I have made a video outlining a simple roadmap to achieving a mid-intermediate (high A2 to low B1 level) within 12-36 months.
Here is a summary of what I say in the video:
→ As a pure beginner, use self-guided study resources AND/OR take lessons. You can take group lessons or private lessons. It is your choice.
→ While you’re using self-study resources and/or taking lessons, write for 10-15 minutes a day, 3+ days a week. Start by writing words only. Build your way up to writing short sentences and then short paragraphs. Have someone correct your writing to make sure you learn from your mistakes. Use a dictionary or other resources when you’re struggling to express what you’d like to write.
→ Talk to yourself out loud for 10-15 minutes a day, 3+ days a week. Start by simply saying words & phrases you learned from your self-study or lessons, but build up to the point where you can carry short conversations with yourself. Use a dictionary or other resources when you’re struggling to express your thoughts.
→ Once you can write short paragraphs and slowly converse with yourself, it’s time to find a private tutor for conversational lessons AND/OR use an app such as HelloTalk or Tandem to find practice partners for free. Set up a minimum of one 45-minute conversation session per week.
If you’d like to expedite the process and become conversational in less than 12 months, increase the amount of time you put into language learning and work with myself or someone on my team. Book a free consultation if that would interest you and we can discuss further.
