Hello reader! I hope you’re had a great day.
I personally did, in part because I feel as if I’m on the right track to hitting my business and fitness goals. I have a clear idea of my goals, a plan to hit them, and some early indications that I’m on the right track.
I don’t feel this way about every aspect of my life.
I have yet to gain more clarity on the following:
Creating resources for Gujarati learners
Dating
My day-to-day workflow
I’ll be thinking about this in the days and weeks to come.
Today’s blog post is all getting you on the right language learning track.
I spoke with a Calgary Language Nerds’ student earlier today. He felt unclear about what:
Daily language learning routines he should follow
Language learning resources to use
When you don’t feel clear about these two things, you may feel frustrated, overwhelmed, stressed, and/or confused.
Here’s a simple 3-step process I used to help him gain clarity and get on the right track.
Identify his weaknesses
Create a list of resources to address those weaknesses
Create a simple daily routine using the resource list we made
In the case of this student, his weakness was using colloquial English.
He already has an advanced level, but his word choice is quite different from native speakers. It’s also worth mentioning that he takes a very logical, analytical, and structured approach to language learning.
Therefore, we created the following highly personalized plan together. I’ve copy/pasted this from the plan I sent him:
Listen to 5-10 podcasters. Pick 1-2 who speak in a way that appeal to you
Listen to 1 podcast episode for 10-20 minutes, 2+ days a week with the transcript. Write down words/phrases the podcaster used repeatedly as well as any words/phrases that caught your attention
Spend 5+ minutes a day talking aloud to yourself and respond to 2+ questions from this website: http://iteslj.org/questions/. If possible, incorporate some of the words/phrases your wrote down while listening to a podcast
Continue taking classes with your instructor (he takes classes at my business) and working on the homework she provides
I cannot stress the importance of buy-in and personalization.
You need to feel excited and hopeful after creating a plan. You need to buy-in to the plan. In my case, this happens by ensuring the plan is personalized. I also appreciate having confirmation from a trusted expert that the plan makes sense.
I’m always happy to hop on a Zoom call to help you create a personalized plan and/or give you feedback on a plan you already follow. Contact me to set that up.
