Note before you read this article: Everyone has their own take on effective ways to learn a language. Because of this, last summer I decided to try distilling fundamental truths about language learning that all, or at least most, language learning experts would agree on.
This is the fifth lesson. You can watch the video here, listen on Spotify here, or keep scrolling down to read a summary. You can see all 12 lessons by clicking here.

ChatGPT is my favourite tool to create a personalized plan to start learning a language.
ChatGPT is an AI chatbot. As I’m writing this now, it's free to use. Simply go to chat.openai.com and create a free account. Next, ask the chatbot for personalized advice to find the best way to learn the language of your choice. I’d recommend using this prompt as a starting point:
"Pretend to be an expert language learning consultant and ask me questions, one at a time, to coach me to find the best way for me to learn________ (language you’re learning.)"
The chatbot will ask you questions to create a personalized learning plan. If you don't like the plan it creates, there is a button that says "Regenerate." Click that or reply to the AI bot by saying:
“Please suggest an alternate plan."
This chatbot is a my favourite starting point to get personalized language learning advice.
Here are some other self-study apps and programs you might consider when first starting your language learning journey.

Remember that not every method will work for everyone, so it's essential to do your research, try different methods, and adjust your approach along the way.
