Once you have an intermediate level, it’s easy to feel like you’ve hit a plateau.
The main gap between an intermediate and advanced level is vocabulary. From what I’ve read in the past, a native speaker will know, roughly, 20,000 words. A very advanced speaker will know about over 10,000.
These are rough approximations and I might be slightly off on those numbers. If you happen to have a source that gives precise data, send it over to me.
How do you track the number of words you know?
I haven’t had a great answer to this, but recently found one: LingQ. I have used the app for years for reading and listening practice, but only recently did it hit me that the app tracks the number of words you know.
Therefore, if you want to track your progress at an intermediate level, consider using LingQ. As you use the app, you’ll be able to track your progress by the noticing the increase of vocabulary over time.
The app costs $15.99 CAD per month (though it does have a very limited free tier.)
It’s cheaper if you pre-pay for more than 1 month. I should also mention that the app does take some time to figure out how to use. It’s not the most user-friendly, based on feedback I’ve received from others I’ve suggested the app to.
Hope you found this helpful!

Thank you so muchfor this recommendation! I downloaded this and did a lesson. I love how it tracks my progress and all I need for now is the free version as I am already doing other stuff as well. This fits in really well with that. I have chosen the graded reader intermediate Chinese course which is just what I want at the moment.😊
