Language learning for fast-paced brains (Law, Tech, Engineering, ADHD)

A behind-the-scenes look at the exact type of high-intensity mind that actually succeeds at learning a language at the Calgary Language Nerds.

I’ve noticed…

I've noticed there are certain personality traits and learning preferences that click with my teaching approach. Because of that, I’m trying to be more clear with my messaging to make sure I'm attracting the right people.

Immersiveness + structure.

The primary trait I see in common is the desire for a structured and immersive learning environment. This shows up in a number of ways. I talked to a lady today, for instance, who just retired. She told me she wants to work hard at learning languages, the same way she used to work hard in her career.

Fast-paced minds.

Another example is the propensity for my clients to work in fast-paced, intellectually demanding fields such as law, tech, engineering, or healthcare. They take their careers seriously and want to bring that intensity over to their language studies.

The ADHD brain.

A third trait, which surprised me, is the percentage of people who eventually share with me they have ADHD. When I noticed this, I began researching and pondering why that would be. I think it's due to the fact that, from what I've read, many ADHD brains derive energy from high-demand, challenging situations, provided they are interested in the topic of study. All this aligns well with my approach.

As a fun aside, in my personal friend group by sheer coincidence almost everyone has ADHD. Clearly our vibes match!

All this fascinates me.

It’s fascinating how such patterns replicate in business when you finally slow down and look at the data. I feel I can now do better work for the right type of client.
