The holiday season is right around the corner.
I am what you’d call a "Seasonal Language Learner.” This is someone who studies intensively for 1-2 months and coasts for the remainder of the year. That’s why, for example, I was in Taipei for most of last summer, but right now I only spend 30-60 minutes a week on my Mandarin studies.
Incorporating an annual Language Learning Season has been one of the most effective methods I’ve used to learn languages.
Make this holiday season your language learning season…especially if you’ll have some time off.
Here are some strategies to implement during a language learning season:
Take private lessons
Find language exchange partners to practice speaking with
Switch all devices to your target language
Stop consuming any content (e.g., Netflix, YouTube, social media) in your first language - switch all of it to the target language
Consume listening and reading material in your target language for hours every day
Keep a journal and write in your target language
I’d recommend your “language learning” season to last for at least 2 weeks.
Good luck with your language learning journey!
If I can do anything to be of assistance, don’t hesitate to reach out :)
