I’m off to Taiwan for the summer
For those of you who didn’t know, I live abroad for 1-2 months a year. It’s a way for me to immerse myself in a new culture, rapidly improve in another language, and expand my horizons. This time around I’ve decided to visit Taipei. I’ve spent two months here before and am excited to revisit the island :)
For the remainder of the summer, I will write blog posts to share my language learning experiences and travel stories.
I have arranged to speak Mandarin for 5+ hours a day while in Taipei by:
Spending time with friends I have here
Attending language exchange events and participating in other local activities
Taking lessons every day with a private tutor
Living with a homestay family
The journey to Taipei was a long one
I bought my flight tickets using points. Because of this, I didn’t have much choice in terms of my itinerary. My flight path was:
Calgary to Denver. My flight was at 6:21am and I arrived at the airport just before 3:00am.
Denver to San Francisco. I literally walked off the plane and went straight into a line to board my next flight. If my flight had landed in SF even 15 minutes late, I would have missed my connection.
San Francisco to Taipei. I found for a surprisingly affordable seat upgrade and was able to recline my seat fully, so I had a more comfortable flight that I normally would have.
I had some unexpected hiccups along the way
Anyone who has travelled before knows that things rarely go exactly according to plan. In my case, I unexpectedly didn’t have anywhere to say.
But more on that in the next blog post… ;) Stay tuned!
