Wow...99% grammatical accuracy?!
A fascinating student case study
I had the recent privilege to teach a very advanced French student. She:
Spoke at a near-native fluency (80-120 words per minute)
Could discuss simple topics and complex topics
Had 99% spoken grammatical accuracy
Interestingly, people often have better grammar when they speak compared to when they write.
This student was a perfect example of this. While her spoken grammatical accuracy was at 99%, her written accuracy was a little bit lower: 84%.
She improved it to 89.7% in just 2 lessons.
The main key was to reread her writing. The first two times she wrote a text, she did not take much time to reread it. As soon as she took time to revise her work, the student was able to find many of her own errors.
The other thing that helped was to find patterns of mistakes.
In most cases, people don’t make one-off mistakes. For example, I noticed that this student frequently made mistakes with ER vs É in French. Therefore, I took 10 minutes to teach a simple trick to never make that mistake again.
She has 2 lessons left…I really hope she can reach over 90% accuracy.
My personal goal is at least 94% for her. That would equate to a 10% improvement in 4 lessons. Not bad at all.
Thanks for reading!
