Five Tips to Learn a Language Faster
While you cannot acquire a language overnight, it is probable that you are progressing slower than you could be. My hope is that, assuming you value speed (not everyone does), by implementing these tips you are able to expedite the journey to fluency.
By the way: I recorded this newsletter as a podcast. Click the button below if you would prefer listening to it instead of reading.
Tip #1: Be 100% Ready to Learn
What state of mind are you in when you practice or study your target language? Are you focused on the task at hand or is your mind elsewhere? Are you in a relaxed state of mind?
These are all questions you need to ask yourself. Make sure you get a good night sleep, drink lots of water, eat well, exercise, and manage your emotional well-being. Language learning is a cognitively challenging task. If your brain is not in peak condition you will struggle.
Tip #2: Hire a Tutor
Most people learn faster when taking private lessons. By having a tutor, you have someone to practice speaking with who can answer any questions you have about the target language and provide the right amount of structure to keep you on track. A tutor also provides external accountability and a direct link to the culture behind the language you are learning.
In short, hire a tutor if you want to learn faster.
Tip #3: Condense Your Studies
Condensing your studies means to study more hours in less days. In other words, the more intensively you study, the faster you will learn. This is the most foolproof strategy you can use to progress rapidly.
Tip #4: Be Consistent
Consistency leads to momentum. Momentum propels you forward toward your desired level of proficiency. Continuously starting, stopping, and restarting slows you down.
Tip #5: Don’t Be a Perfectionist
Perfectionism is a mask for insecurity that reduces acquisition speed. Focus on being okay with making mistakes as it will have a two-fold positive effect:
You will slowly remove your mask of insecurity (i.e., perfectionism) and have more self-confidence.
You will be able to communicate with others more naturally much sooner, further bolstering your self-confidence.
