I’ve been developing my own teaching method called Fast-Track to Fluency since late 2023. The goal is simple: reliably reduce the time required to reach fluency. This project is still a work in progress, but today I’d like to share the four pillars to the teaching method.
The first two (knowledge and practice) are widely understood. The second two (psychology and metrics) are rarely discussed, yet are just as important.
If you teach languages, incorporate these pillars into your lessons. If you are a learner, use them to progress faster and be more engaged in the learning process.
Pillar #1: Knowledge.
To be fluent, you need lots of knowledge about the language you’re learning. That’s why all language learning resources and classes will focus heavily on transferring knowledge to you (e.g., grammar, pronunciation, vocabulary.) Here’s a blog post about how we transfer knowledge to our students and the typical class format.
Pillar #2: Practice.
Knowledge alone is not enough. Practicing and applying your knowledge is required to become fluent. This is common sense.
Pillar #3: Psychology.
As I discussed in depth here, knowledge and practice are only half the equation. What’s equally important is overcoming psychological barriers to fluency.
Pillar #4: Metrics.
It’s helpful to track your progress with data because it provides certainty that you’re improving. In addition, measurable progress toward a meaningful goal is motivating. Without tracking progress, you won’t feel motivated. Read more about the metrics we track here.
Use these four pillars yourself.
Make sure you’re using resources that address pillar 1 (knowledge) and pillar 2 (practice). Next, explore the psychological barriers holding you back. Do what you can to overcome them. Lastly, use simple metrics to objectively measure your progress toward whatever your goals are.
